Canterbury Mountaineering Club (CMC) - New Zealand
Located in the Scenic South
The CMC is based in Christchurch, in the centre of an island dominated by a rib of rugged and challenging Southern Alps that extend the 800km of the island. 223 named peaks rise higher than 2300m. Just over an hour's drive takes you from the seaside city of Christchurch into the solitude and grandeur of the Alps.
Supporting Climbers since 1925
The CMC was founded by a generation of pioneering and hard working people who responded to the loss of some of their mates in accidents with practical steps. They built a great many huts in the back country, where shelter from the challenging weather and conditions is a prime requirement. They ran instruction camps for newcomers to the mountains. And they had a lot of fun together!
The CMC has continued in this tradition ever since, providing skills, instruction, trips and friendship. Its members have been a recognised part of the international climbing fraternity since they were part of the lead up to the conquering of Mt Everest.
Is the CMC for You?
The CMC each year welcomes many new members from NZ and all corners of the world, who have been drawn to its mountains. They base themselves in our huts, young ones start their climbing with our instruction, and most come back many times for more.
Making Contact
The CMC website cmc.net.nz is the focus of our club's activities. There you can find where our huts are, where our regular meetings are held, which instruction courses are coming, how to meet up with other members for climbing adventures, ask questions, and see some of what other members have been up to.
