Lycian Way - Trekking in Turkey

Trekking in Turkey (www.trekkinginturkey.com)

Kate's website describes three areas in Turkey - Lycia. the central Taurus, and the Kaçkar Mountains, and the trekking routes which she has researched and described in her books. Find the area best suited to you at the time you want to trek, and get all the information you need before you arrive. Includes places to stay, transport, guides, links to trekking outfitters, other activities, press reports and a picture gallery. You can also buy the trekking guide books, download GPS point to help you routefind, download maps and look at photos of your chosen area.

Lycian Way

Turkey's first long distance walking route - opened 1999 - follows the mountainous coast of Lycia for 500km. It's waymarked with red-white paint flashes in Grande Randonnee style. It dips to sandy beaches, climbs headlands, wanders through forests, visits a lighthouse and passes many ruins of the ancient Lycian and Roman civilisations. Stop off at tiny villages or seaside towns, stay the night with the locals, camp wild in the woods. The Lycian Way book contains a full description of the route and a map. GPS points and latest update information available on the website.

St Paul Trail

Another 500km waymarked trekking route (red-white), following in part the route over the Taurus Mountains used by St Paul. A branch follows the spectacular Koprulu Canyon through a National Park. The routes meet at the ruins of Adada and circle Lake Egirdir - a 40km long lake. Cross the lake by fishing boat for a final trek on Roman road into Antioch. Steep and wild paths between shepherd pastures, through forests, over passes - and optional climb of two summits over 2500m. The St Paul Trail book contains a full description of the route, altitude profiles, GPS points and a map. Latest update information available on the website.

The Kaçkar

Published spring 2008, 40 trekking routes in the stunning Kaçkar mountains in Turkey's NE. This lake-scattered granite massif lies between the Black Sea and the white water of the Coruh river, and tops out at 3932m (Mt Kackar). Includes low level spring treks through meadows of wild flowers, treks between traditional villages and summer pastures, scree-strewn pass-crossings over 3000m. Come in June for snowshoeing, July for white water rafting, August to climb Kaçkar or September for bear watching. The Kaçkar book contains many new routes from new trailheads, altitude profiles, GPS points and the first publicly available detailed map of the area.
